Japan’s Auto Market in 2022 totals 3.4 million sales, a 6.2% decrease from the prior year and the lowest level in the past decade. In December sales grew 1.6%, with 283,577 new registrations.

The Japanese auto market in 2022 totals 3.4 millions sales, a 6.2% decrease from the prior year and the lowest level of the past decade. In December sales grew 1.6%, with 283,577 new registrations. 

Looking at cumulative data from 2022, brand-wise the top 10 remain unchanged compared to the previous year. Toyota ranks in 1st with 1.06 millions sales (-14.1%), followed by Honda at 534,658 (-0.8%), Suzuki at 478,987 registrations (-3.6%), Daihatsu at 390,052 (-7.1%), Nissan with 379,459 sales (+2.8%), Mazda at 150,115 (+3.7%) and Subaru with 92,091 cumulative sales (-1.2%).

Mitsubishi maintains 8th spot with 81,059 sales (+17.3%), in front of Lexus with 41,252 sales (-19.3%) and Volkswagen closes the Top 10 with 32,229 new car registrations (-8.5%).
