Uruguayan vehicles market falls due to the global pandemic affecting sales. Indeed, Full Year 2020 sales have been 34.540, down 15% compared to 2019. Chevrolet reports the largest growth in the leaderboard, rising 3.8%.

Market Trend

The Uruguayan vehicle market has been affected in 2020 by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted sales significantly. 

The market declined in recent years from the record established in 2013, with 56.220 light vehicles sold to the 44.285 units reported in 2016. However, in 2017 the market reported a robust performance ending the year at the second-best result ever, with 54.948 units (+25.4%).

In 2018 the market was heavily negative, ending with registrations at 43.815 and marking the lowest annual volume since 2010, leading the market down 20.3%.

However, in 2019 the market was still declining, falling below the 2010’s volume. Indeed, Total registrations have been 40.617 (-7.3%).

After starting the year flat (+0.1%), the market quickly collapsed in March as the virus struck. The sharpest drop in sales this year was in April when sales declined by 58.4%. In the following months the market recovered reaching -4.3% in September. In November the market grew in double-digits (+12.9%), and remained positive in December (+5.2%).

Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 34.540, reporting a 15% decrease compared to 2019.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Volkswagen (-19.9%) lost 0.9% market share, followed by Renault (-20.3%), which lost 0.9% share. Suzuki on the other hand gained 1.4% share, falling 4.2%.  Chevrolet reported the best performance on the leaderboard by gaining 3.8%, overtaking Fiat which lost 24.9%.

Nissan lost 9.5%, followed by Hyundai (+2.7%) -up 3 spots- and Peugeot (down 1 spot) which lost 27.2% sales. Closing the leaderboard we have Citroen -down 1 spot- losing 35.4% this year and Toyota falling 1 position by losing 36.3%.

The most sold model in the country is the Renault Kwid with 1.961 sales (-34.2%), holding 6.5% market share.
