Finnish cars market in 2022 totals 80,061 sales, a 16.2% decrease compared to the prior year. December confirms the downtrend, reporting the 3rd consecutive fall with 6,129 new registrations (-4.2%).

Looking at cumulative data from 2022 brand-wise, the leader remains Toyota with 14,464 sales (+1.0%), followed by Volkswagen with 7,122 (-29.3%), Kia -up 1 spot- at 6,902 sales (-13.9%) and Skoda -down 1 spot- with 6,754 sales (-21.0%).

5th and 6th position remained unchanged, respectively held by Volvo with 6,703 (-13.8%) and Mercedes with 5,105 sales (-9.5%). While BMW jumps a spot into 7th with 4,894 sales (+2.3%) overtaking Ford with 3,440 sales (-33.8%).

Nissan jumps 2 spots into 9th position with 2,937 sales (-9.4%), pushing Audi down to 10th with 2,732 new car registrations (-27.7%).

Medium-Term Market Trend

The Finnish car market has remained quite stable in the passed decade with a main exception in the last 3 years. In fact after a 14.6% growth in 2011 the market remained between a low of 99,832 in 2013 and a peak of 116,743 in 2018 until the arrival of the pandemic.

In March 2020 the Covid-virus arrived in Europe causing many economies to shut down temporarily. The Finnish market suffered a 15.3% loss reaching 93,103 sales  by the end of 2020, the lowest levels of the decade.

2021 presented a year of recovery slight recovery from the fall and sales remained nearly unvaried compared to the previous year. While 2022 is projecting a -11.2% by the end of the year, with sales having fallen in most months.

A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs, with Scandinavian countries being ahead of this wave.
