Mozambican vehicles sales grew 32.4% in 2018 with 3.280, ending the recent years’ awful trend. Toyota held the market leadership, surging 44.5%, but holding just 18.7% of share. Ford and Nissan improved in double-digits.

Mozambican economy continues in a slow growth trajectory that followed the 2016 hidden debt crisis. Macroeconomic conditions are improving, but the economic performance is yet to revert to the pre-crisis levels. Real gross domestic product (GDP) growth is estimated at 3.3% in 2018, down from 3.7% in 2017 and 3.8% in 2016. Small and medium enterprises have fallen back and their capacity to generate jobs has been restricted even further as credit supply and demand for goods and services remains constrained.

A slight recovery in growth is expected, projections sit around 4% of GDP for 2019 and may be higher in the medium term if gas production investments are materialized.

Mozambican vehicles market is finally back on track, after an extremely weak 2015-2017 period of time, where registrations almost two-third of 2014 volume. Indeed, when the market had posted the all-time record in 2014 with 7.286 sales, nobody would have a drop in sales at 2.478 units.

However, in 2018 the market started recovering, improving 54% from the previous year. Indeed, the year ended with 3.817 units sold.

The competitive landscape was dominated by  Toyota with 614 sales (+44.5%) widening the gap from Ford and Nissan. However, its market share is at 18.7%, which is one of the lowest levels in Central and South Africa. Indeed, several players are active in the country, but the recent unexpected sharp crisis has reduced the single brands sales at minimum terms.

Market Outlook

After registering three consecutive years of decline, the market finally embarked on a positive pathway in 2018. Indeed, the market is seen to be recovering during the 2019-2025 period of time.
